Tool comparisonThe Best AI Tool for Long-Form Articles Plans the Length From the Search Results
Any AI can write 4,000 words. The useful question is whether 4,000 is the right number, and whether word 3,000 is still worth reading. Six tools compared on length, research and structure.

On this page▸
The best AI tool for long-form articles researches before it writes and plans the length from what already ranks. RepublishAI writes 3,500-word articles for WordPress, SEOWriting.ai and Koala handle long SEO drafts cheaply, Claude is the strongest pure drafter, and PixelClaw sets each article's length from the top three ranking pages.
Long-form is a length the topic earns, not a setting
Most AI tools treat length as a dial: short, medium, long. Turn it up and you get more words. Whether those words help is another matter. Google's guidance on helpful content asks writers directly whether they are writing to a word count because they heard Google prefers one, and answers that it does not.
Long articles also fail differently from short ones. A short draft is wrong or thin; a long one is usually sound in its first third and repetitive after that, with the same point restated under new headings. The tools below differ most in how they prevent that.
So we compared AI tools for long-form articles on three things: how long each will write, how it researches before writing, and how it decides the length. PixelClaw is our product; everything else was read from each vendor's own site on November 5, 2026.
| Tool | Length | Research before writing | From (own site) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RepublishAI | 3,500+ words (Atlas agent) | Reads the top 10 Google results | Free plan; $49 a month |
| SEOWriting.ai | Up to about 5,200 words | Real-time SERP research | $14 a month billed yearly |
| Koala | Sold by words, 45,000 a month | Real-time data | $25 a month |
| Claude | Very long drafts in one chat | Web search and your files | Free; Pro $20 a month |
| Machined | Not stated | Keyword research, cited sources | $19 a month for 30 articles |
| PixelClaw | 800 to 5,000 words, planned from the top 3 results | Ranking pages and reader questions | Free; $49.99 a month |
RepublishAI: 3,500-word articles for WordPress
RepublishAI is built around agents for WordPress. Its Atlas agent analyzes the top 10 Google results for a keyword and writes articles of 3,500 words or more, Vision adds images, Nexus adds internal links from your sitemap, and Nova refreshes older posts. Starter is $49 a month for up to 14 articles you publish by hand; Autopilot, shown at $99 a month as a limited-time price against $199, publishes 30 or more a month for you.
Its free plan gives you the AI editor and outline tools for one WordPress site, which is enough to judge whether its long articles suit your topics before paying.
Watch out for: it works with WordPress only, and a fixed 3,500-word floor will be too long for plenty of questions.
SEOWriting.ai and Koala: long SEO drafts at a low price
SEOWriting.ai's largest article size runs to about 5,200 words, with real-time SERP research, internal links and WordPress auto-posting, from $14 a month billed yearly. Koala's KoalaWriter writes long SEO and affiliate articles with real-time data and publishes to WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Ghost, priced by words from $25 a month for 45,000.
Both are good value when you want long drafts and will edit them.
Watch out for: on both, stronger models cost more per article, and on Koala long articles use up a word allowance quickly.
Claude: the strongest drafter for very long pieces
When you bring the research and the outline, Claude writes long pieces that hold together better than most dedicated tools, and a Project keeps your sources, style guide and earlier drafts in view. The free plan has usage limits; Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly.
A practical way to use it: paste your outline with a word budget for each section and ask for one section at a time, so each gets its full attention.
Watch out for: it does not plan SEO structure, add images or publish. Those stay with you.
PixelClaw: length planned from what ranks
PixelClaw does not ask you for a length. When research runs, it reads the pages that rank for the keyword and plans the article at the middle length of the top three, kept between 800 and 5,000 words. The outline gives every section its own word budget, so the draft spends words where the topic needs them instead of padding the middle.
After drafting, a length check passes anything from the plan up to 10% past the longest top-ranking article. Posts over 1,200 words get a table of contents check, and the score covers headings, an opening answer, an FAQ and sources. The free plan includes enough credits for two posts; Starter is $49.99 a month.
How to keep a long article readable
Length only helps when a reader can find their part. Put the answer in the first paragraph and a short list of takeaways near the top. Add a table of contents above 1,200 words. Break sections every few hundred words with headings that read like the questions people ask. Use a table wherever you compare more than two things, and end with an FAQ for the questions that did not earn a section.
Then cut. Read the draft once looking only for points made twice, and delete the weaker copy. For more on choosing a writer by the kind of article you publish, see the best AI article writers, and for the structure that ranks, our guide to SEO blogs.
- Google says it has no preferred word count, so the right length is whatever the question and the ranking pages call for.
- RepublishAI's Atlas agent reads the top 10 Google results and writes 3,500-word articles for WordPress.
- SEOWriting.ai writes up to about 5,200 words per article; Koala sells long-form by the word.
- Claude drafts very long pieces well when you bring the research and structure.
- PixelClaw plans each article at the middle length of the top three ranking pages, between 800 and 5,000 words.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a long-form article be?+
As long as the question needs and no longer. For search, the pages that already rank are the best guide: if the top results run about 2,000 words, a 6,000-word article usually repeats itself. Google says it has no preferred word count.
Can AI write a 5,000-word article?+
Yes, several tools can. The common problem is the middle: long AI drafts tend to repeat points and pad sections. Tools that plan an outline with a word budget per section hold up better than ones asked for a total length.
Is longer content better for SEO?+
Not by itself. Longer articles can rank for more related searches when every section adds something, but length added for its own sake makes the page harder to read and easier to leave.
What is the best AI for long-form writing?+
For WordPress sites that want very long articles, RepublishAI. For cheap long SEO drafts, SEOWriting.ai or Koala. For drafting with your own research, Claude. For long articles researched, sized from the results, scored and published for you, PixelClaw.
